Leon Valley Little Victory Organic Community Garden
The City owns and operates the Leon Valley Community Garden, located at 6440 Evers Road, near the Forest Meadow entrance to Raymond Rimkus Park. Plots are available on a first come first serve basis in January of each year by submitting an application to the Public Works Department. This is an organic garden, so chemical pest controls and fertilizers are not allowed.
Each gardener has access to a typically 10’ x 10’ garden plot, although some of our more ambitious gardeners have taken on more than one plot. Each plot is supplied with its own water spigot and gardeners are urged to be conservative with the water, by the use of a drip irrigation system. Each plot contains organic garden soil (light garden mix) and once yearly, mulch is supplied. The City schedules informational sessions from the Bexar County Master Gardener program.
The garden shed is for use by all the gardeners for storage of tools and planting supplies. A mailbox at the front gate contains a calendar and notebook for recording visits to the garden, and for sharing information. Plots require a time commitment from each Gardener of at least four hours a month, but the plots are free to use. All plots are reassigned each year in January, and during the year, if we receive notice that someone no longer wants their plot.
We hope all the Community Gardeners have a great time gardening and end up with a bountiful harvest, but please feel free to contact us for any questions, concerns or problems that might be encountered over the next year, at (210) 681-1232.
