Flage Retirement Ceremony

(Wed.), June 14, 2023

(Leon Valley, TX) (June 14, 2023) – The American Legion, Audie L. Murphy Post No. 336, the City of Leon Valley, Texas and Cub Scout Pack 485 will conduct their annual Flag Retirement Ceremony on Wednesday, June 14, 2023 at 6:30 p.m.  Post 336 and Scout Pack 485 will perform a solemn and dignified flag disposal using a burn pit provided by the Leon Valley Fire Department.  The presentation will illustrate the proper handling of not only the U.S. flag, but also the State of Texas flag, the American Legion flag, and various other flags that have been offered by American Legion members, Pack 485, and by the public at large for disposal by burning.

Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.  In 1916 President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day and on August 3, 1949 National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.  The United States Flag Code states, “The Flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

It is customary for civic organizations to conduct dignified disposal of flags during the month of June recognizing Flag Day.  The American Legion and Scouts have long partnered with the City of Leon Valley in supporting patriotic events such as this.

The local community is invited to the ceremony where light snacks and beverages will be provided.  Flag retirement will be held at the Leon Valley Community and Conference Center, Veterans Memorial Flagpole area, 6427 Evers Road, 78238.

Parking is free in the library area all day.
