Leon Valley Finley Apartment Fire

Finley apartment remains from fire

September 14, 2024

The Leon Valley Fire Department was dispatched at 21:38 to the Finley Apartments located at 5650 Grissom Road for a structure fire.  Dispatch reported heavy fire through the roof and partial collapse.  Crews responding could see heavy smoke as soon as they left the station.

All mutual aid departments were dispatched. LVFD arrived to find heavy fire through the roof and ¾ of the roof of building 12.  All residents were accounted for on scene without injuries reported.  Crews deployed three hose lines for primary search and fire control. The LVFD ladder was positioned for aerial operations.  More ceiling and roof collapses were reported, and the decision was made to pull crews out of the structure and begin defensive operations.  Aerial operation began with Shavano Park, Castle Hills and LVFD ladders.

The fire was declared under control at 00:30 and mutual aid responders were released from the scene.  LVFD crews are still on scene for fire control.  The apartment complex is securing fencing to secure all areas as the building is unsafe to be around due to possible collapse.  Security guards are on scene controlling access.

Fire investigation is currently being conducted. Twelve (12) individual apartments were destroyed.  The Red Cross was contacted and arrived on scene last night.  More updates to follow as information becomes available.
